Left-wing activist and founder of Insurgence USA, John Sullivan, was arrested on January 14 after the FBI issued a warrant for his arrest the day prior for his participation in the U.S. Capitol protest.
The U.S. Department of Justice charged Sullivan with civil disorders, entering a restricted building or grounds without authority, and violent entry or disorderly conduct.
Sullivan’s video is being used as evidence against him. Sullivan said when the police questioned him, his sole purpose of attending the protest was to document it as a journalist. He admitted to not having any press credentials.
In the video, he says,
“I can’t believe this is reality, we accomplished this shit. We did this shit together. Fuck yeah. This is fucking history, we’re all a part of this fucking history.” He continues to say, “There’s so many people, let’s go! This shit is ours, fuck yeah.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Sullivan said,
“I was worried about people recognizing me and thinking that I was ANTIFA or, like, BLM or whatever. “The entire time they’re yelling, ‘Fuck Antifa! Fuck, BLM.’ I’m not saying I’m Antifa, by any means. But I definitely believe Black Lives Matter.” He continued, “I had to relate to these people, and build trust in the short amount of time I had there to get where I need to go.”
This isn’t Sullivan’s first arrest either, last June he was charged with 3rd-degree felony riot and criminal mischief for his participation in the Black Lives Matter Provo Riots. In the video he took, he kicked other people’s vehicles, threatened drivers, and told other protestors to block the intersections.
The founder of the Black Lives Matter Utah chapter, Lex Scott, said,
“John Sullivan is not a member of Black Lives Matter Utah, he is not a member of our chapter, he is not affiliated with our chapter. He started a group called Insurgence USA.”
Update: Sullivan was released from jail without bail on January 15.
